Onions

 

Onions have a shallow, sparsely branched root system with most roots in the top 250 <> 300mm of soil. Root density decreases with soil depth. The minimal branching and root hair density on the shallow root biomass has considerable influence on the plants ability to extract nutrients and moisture for growth, in particular the less mobile nutrients e.g.: Phosphorus, Potassium, and the immobile trace elements and minerals.
